Moments
The only thing the sport gives us are moments. But what the hell is life, Peter, apart from moments?
-Beartown by Fredrik Backman (paperback, p. 109)
Indeed, life is but a series of moments. In rough chronological order, here are some moments I remember that have impacted my life immeasurably - both good and bad.
- changing schools in the middle of 6th grade (itself a series of moments)
- putting on Rollerblades for the first time, learning to skate and play roller hockey
- each time I stepped out on the rink before a hockey game
- deciding to end my first marriage, testifying in front of a judge that we did, in fact, want to be divorced (I didn’t know you had to do that!)
- meeting Stefanie, terrified to open myself up again so soon after a failed marriage
- becoming a father, watching A’s birth after a long labor (over 24 hours)
- becoming a girl dad, our family seemed “right” after S was born
- losing Scout that day, so quickly, my dog of 15 years that had been with me through so much
- meeting the trans-America cyclists this summer, the sheer coincidence, and realizing they aren’t that different than me and the possibilities that opened op
- every time I realize it’s time to move on from a job
