What’s happening…2025

Overall the first month of 2025 went well.

I did very well with my goals to:

  1. Buy less stuff, especially clothes
  2. More physical exercise (at least 4 30 min workouts - biking, walking, just moving)
  3. Read more (50 pages week goal)
  4. Eat less fast food

I closed my workout and move rings 29 and 28 days, respectively during January. Which is a big improvement over the end of 2024 which I was in the mid to high teens for each. This has led to an improvement mentally for me as well. I still feel worn down and tired at times, but if I get out and get some air or walk it always is worth it.

I did more reading, but need to make sure I start before going to bed, as I tend to fall asleep or nod off when I read there, right before sleep. It’s only going to get harder as we get deeper into tax season.

We did some fun family stuff as well, including 2 Blues hockey games (one with each kid) and 2 dinners out with my brother and his family (which kinda put us over budget for dining out, but was worth it to spend some extra time with them).

Work is starting to ramp up, apparently we were supposed to work last Saturday (1/25). I did not, because I frankly didn’t have much to do. So far the last week of January I’ve knocked out a bunch of my easier business returns, so I feel like I’m in good shape. I’m sure that will change soon enough. It is what it is. After 25 tax seasons I know it will get done…or we’ll extend it. April 15th always comes and brings relief.

Finally, just to nerd out a bit, I am really enjoying using my Field Notes sized journals this year. I have accumulated a few sets over the past few years but rarely used them. Instead of buying another A5 size journal this year or Baron Fig annual planner/yearbook I decided to use up my Field Notes, starting with one I got with my Patreon pledge to Semi-Rad, Brendan Leonard’s excellent blog. I thought it was appropriate to start the year off with his Practice Maximum Enthusiasm” maxim.
